The new trailer of Unicorn Overlord delves into the social mechanics (to forge bonds of friendship) of the game, through the character of Josef.
We are counting the days to enjoy the new game by Vanillaware, the talented Japanese studio behind hits like Odin Sphere, Dragon’s Crown, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, which this time bets on the tactical role-playing genre.
Their new game is Unicorn Overlord, an exciting JRPG focused on tactical combat, but that also has much to offer at the social level.
The adventure is led by Alain, Gilbert, Virginia, Berengaria and Aramis, a group of heroes who not only have to fight, as their bonds play an important role in the story.
Remember Triangle Strategy? Well, Vanillaware’s new game follows a similar path, but mixing it with the social mechanics we’ve seen in sagas like Persona.
There is already a new trailer available for Unicorn Overlord, entitled Josef’s Social Interaction Guide, which presents how these mechanics work in the cast of characters.
The power of friendship is everything
In Josef’s Social Interaction Guide, this character teaches Alain (the protagonist) everything there is to know about the social bonds of Unicorn Overlord, and the importance they have in the game’s combats.
All the game’s characters can establish a stronger social bond, which leads to friendship. It is important, as it enhances their joint attacks, and offers other narrative solutions.
To increase the social bond with a teammate, you have to converse often with them, but that won’t be enough.
Unicorn Overlord also allows us to give gifts and even organize meals. Both mechanics will increase the trust that other teammates have with Alain, forging a great friendship.
Although the main cast consists of five characters, Unicorn Overlord has up to 60 characters, and we can form our army with whoever we want.
That is why the degree of friendship we maintain with each one is vital. We can define it as a mix between Persona and Triangle Strategy, or classic games of the genre like Tactics Ogre.
Unicorn Overlord, the promising new game from Vanillaware and Atlus, will arrive at stores on March 8th, available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Interestingly, Atlus has not announced a PC version, at least for now.
