Uncomfortable Creator Writing Intimate Scenes in The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered

It has been four years since the launch of The Last of Us Part 2, and whether due to its unexpected remaster or not, Naughty Dog’s adventure continues to give something to talk about. In fact, and as an excuse for the PS5 remastered version of Ellie’s adventure, Neil Druckman has starred in a documentary about the creation of the project and has left us with a curiosity that demonstrated the maturity of the studio, but at the same time was strange to deal with: the risque scenes were quite uncomfortable to create for Duckman.

Violence is something inherent to The Last of Us saga and the video game as a means of entertainment. Even the cinema moves well with shootings, swords or punches, but when it comes to sex, there is a fine line between exaggeration and discomfort. In this case, and as mentioned by the Israeli creative himself in the documentary Grounded, which revolves around the development of The Last of Us Part 2, the fact of creating the intimate scenes of Ellie and Abby it was complicated.

As mentioned by the JeuxVideo colleagues in the documentary that you can see on YouTube, Druckman mentioned that the two intimate sequences of the game are the ones that “made me most uncomfortable while I was writing.” However, he had the aid of Halley Gross. This American screenwriter and former actress, who contributed to the script for Westworld and will also work on the second season of The Last of Us, joined the team for co-write the script con Druckman.

Gross had a relevant role in handling personal dramas and the presence of sexual scenes in the game, one of them more explicit than the other. This formed the narrative of the game together with Druckman, who, as mentioned, seemed overwhelmed at various times in history. “After the first day, Halley Gross told me that she came home and told her husband, ‘I think I just got Ellie’s girlfriend pregnant.’ It was her big idea on the first day and it had enough impact to add a lot to history,” Druckman says jokingly.

In fact, the collaboration between Druckman and Gross will extend into the near future. Gross will be part of the team that will bring the second season to life, along with Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, whose filming has not yet begun. Following the 2023 writers’ strike, production is expected to begin in the middle of this year and, at the earliest, will be released in 2025.
