The Last of Us Part 2 Director Discusses Romance in the Game


Neil Druckmann acknowledges that writing certain parts of The Last of Us Part 2 he found himself “stuck”. The most intimate and romantic parts are due to the co-writer, Halley Gross.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has recently been released on PS5 to offer a new version of the Naughty Dog masterpiece and provide details about its development that are sure to have delighted the biggest fans of the saga.

Coordinating with the release of this The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, Naughty Dog has released the Grounded II documentary where its directors and creatives have revealed new secrets about the game and its development.

For example, The Last of Us co-creator, Neil Druckmann, pointed out that he felt “more uncomfortable” writing the most romantic parts of this sequel. Luckily, co-writer Halley Gross gave more weight to this aspect.

In the documentary, Druckmann recounts that as the story of the game became more “epic and ambitious” he felt more “stuck” in some parts, which made hiring a co-writer an important issue.

The role of Halley Gross in The Last of Us Part 2

The director points out that when Gross joined the team, she questioned the story from the beginning wanting to add more “romantic intimacy between the characters”, which ended up forming some of the most emotional moments of the game.

“Those are areas where I’ve felt more uncomfortable writing,” Druckmann said. “After the first day, she told me she went home and told her husband, ‘I think I just got Ellie’s girlfriend pregnant'”.

Druckman continued talking about Gross: “That was her big idea the first day, and it had a domino effect and, in fact, added a lot to the story”. The result is already well known to all those who completed the game.

Recently, many statements of this kind have emerged. In fact, in one of them, the discarded ending of The Last of Us Part 2 was revealed, which was going to be much bloodier and possibly more controversial.
