Krafton, the parent company of Unknown Worlds, unveils new details of Subnautica 2 in its quarterly earnings report, following the path of other survival games.
Next year we will have to don the diving suit again. Yes, we already know that there is a new Subnautica game in development, but beware, because it will be a revolutionary chapter for the franchise initiated by Unknown Worlds.
The studio, now owned by Krafton (the company behind PUBG), has revealed some interesting details of the new Subnautica game… starting with its title.
It will be called Subnautica 2, something that, frankly, we did not expect. Especially because there is already a ”Subnautica 2”, which is Subnautica: Below Zero, a game released in 2021 for PC and consoles.
Krafton’s plan with Subnautica 2 turns Below Zero into an “additional and independent chapter of the first Subnautica”, which we could define as a spin-off, more or less.
About Subnautica 2, a revolutionary sequel that, in principle, will be available at some point in 2025 (not ruled out for this year), Krafton has revealed new details in its quarterly earnings report for this fiscal year.
Subnautica follows the path of other survival
After Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, the ocean survival franchise will experience a revolution, with a third game that will act as a ”sequel” to what was seen in the previous titles of Unknown Worlds.
In Krafton’s report, the company sets the release of Subnautica 2 for ”2024”, although it is not clear if they refer to the natural year, or the fiscal year, which starts on April 1 of this year and ends on March 31, 2025.
In any case, it is likely that early access to Subnautica 2 will begin in 2024, for a good reason.
In this report, it is confirmed that the new Subnautica will be a multiplayer survival game, adopting a ”game as a service” (GaaS) format, although with single-player modes.
In addition, this title will make use of Unreal Engine 5, to recreate ”an open oceanic world with all the details”, where we will face all kinds of dangers.
The new Subnautica will be set on a new alien planet, and will have cooperative modes for 2, 3 or 4 players, as well as a main solo mode.
As for the narrative, Krafton assures that it will continue the story of the original game, but in a world far from what was seen in Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero. The idea is that the new game will rely on post-launch content, with frequent updates, expansions and DLC.
Are you looking forward to diving into the next Subnautica game? Of course, and, with a bit of luck, we’ll be able to try it out this very year 2024. No platforms have been announced, but it seems clear that it will be released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, at a minimum.
