Subnautica 2: Multiplayer Sequel and Game as a Service

In the past decade, independent and low-resource games have surprised everyone with their excessive success, and Subnautica was one of them. Now, after 10 years since the launch of the original game, the good news has finally been confirmed: Subnautica 2 is official and will arrive sooner than we imagined.

Perhaps many of you, like me, have avoided Subnautica for fear of the vastness of the ocean. However, I can assure you that after trying it, I am clear that what the Unknown Worlds Entertainment studio achieved was impressive. As expected, after the acquisition of the studio by Krafton in 2021, the South Koreans were not going to miss the opportunity to aim for the stars with a sequel.

Now with a bigger budget, previous experience and the Unreal Engine 5 capable of creating creatures twice as terrifying, Krafton’s financial report confirms the obvious: Subnautica 2 is a priority. Furthermore, despite rumors of a 2025 release, the report suggests that the game will be released sometime in 2024.

This means that we will be able to explore the oceans of a new planet before the end of the year. Additionally, unlike Subnautica and its expansion Below Zero, both of which are single-player, Subnautica 2 will be a single-player game with multiplayer cooperative for up to four players without losing sight of the solo play option.

Apart from this, the bittersweet news is the concept of game as a service. The two previous installments were released in early access and achieved a dedicated player base, capable of offering constant feedback. In this case, although there is no mention that Unknown Worlds Entertainment is going to repeat its move, we do know that it will bet, as cited in the report, on a “game-as-a-service model” focused on replayability.

The full details of how this GaaS format will be implemented in an open-world survival game are still some time away, but the simple confirmation that Subnautica 2 exists and will be released this year is enough to keep the excitement going. It should be noted that the game will be launched simultaneously on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on the day of its release.
