Starship Troopers is a science fiction film that has surpassed time with its depth and quality, providing a message that remains relevant among genre fans for decades. Based on the novel “The Space Brigades” by Robert A.Heinlein, the anti-war theme of the film is still current. Directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1997, this intergalactic epic is set in the 23rd century, following the adventures of Johnny Rico and his comrades in the fight against an insectoid alien species. Interestingly, the film is also linked with another iconic film saga, “Star Wars,” with the surprise presence of the Millennium Falcon.
Despite its impressive special effects and spectacular action scenes, Starship Troopers was not a box office success at the time of its release. The film received mixed reviews and a lukewarm reception, with many critics misunderstanding its approach and mistakenly interpreting it as a glorification of fascism. However, over the years, the film has been reevaluated and recognized as an acidic and intelligent critique of international politics and war.
The film’s visual spectacularity, thanks in large part to the talents of the legendary special effects team, including Phil Tippet known for his work in the original Star Wars movies, is noteworthy. Tippet was responsible for bringing the impressive alien creatures and majestic spaceships to life in the film.
What many fans may not know is that Starship Troopers paid tribute to another iconic science fiction saga, Star Wars. Inspired by one of the famous scenes in “The Empire Strikes Back,” where the Millennium Falcon attaches to the conning tower of an imperial destroyer, the Starship Troopers production team decided to include a similar detail on one of the ships in the film. A tiny reproduction of the Millennium Falcon was placed on the back of one of the conning towers of the Rodger Young-class corvettes, one of the Citizen Federation ships. Although almost impossible to see in the movie, various photographs of the models taken during filming show this detail.
For those interested in spotting the tiny Millennium Falcon in the film, Starship Troopers is available within the Disney+ catalog.
Overall, Starship Troopers has continued to captivate audiences and remains a classic within the science fiction genre, offering a timeless message and an entertaining experience for fans.
