Great Teacher Onizuka has become one of the most beloved works by the Japanese public, although it has a murky plot. Live-action series adaptations of manga and anime have become a new way of producing world-renowned works. One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho have been recent successes, and now Japan will try its luck again with one of its most legendary series: Great Teacher Onizuka.
This new live-action project, titled GTO: Revival, is the sequel to the original live-action version that was released in 1998. A trailer on social networks shows Onizuka’s return to high school and how things have changed since then. It’s worth noting that the actor from the 90s series, Takashi Sorimachi, will once again play the former biker.
The series is set to premiere on April 1 in Japan, but unfortunately, a worldwide release is not planned. The first live-action series didn’t reach much of the West, and considering this is a direct sequel, it probably won’t either.
Released in the late 90s, GTO tells the story of Eikichi Onizuka, a former biker who becomes a teacher with the goal of connecting with young high school girls. However, his job will not be easy, as he has to take charge of the most conflictive course in the entire institute.
