The production of Mad Max: Fury on the Road was a creative process that consumed more than 20 years of the director’s life, George Miller. The film, which became a box office hit and a critically acclaimed work, had a bumpy road before reaching the big screen. One of the biggest challenges for Miller was to find the right actor to play the iconic Mad Max character, since Mel Gibson, who had played the character in the previous films, had reached an age that made it difficult to participate in such a physically demanding film. In addition, problems in his personal life and different controversies involving the actor made Miller decide to bet on another face for the iconic role.

In search of Max

As detailed in the book “Blood, Sweat & Chrome” by Kyle Buchanan, the production held auditions for all the male actors available at that time who covered an age range between 30 and 50 years old. Several actors were considered, including Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender. However, one of the names that caught Miller’s attention the most was that of the rapper Eminem after his outstanding performance in the film “8 Mile”. Miller was impressed by the quality of Eminem’s work and thought he could bring something special to the role of Mad Max.

However, the logistics of filming in Namidia and Eminem’s reluctance to leave the United States for so long led to the role finally falling to Tom Hardy, who impressed Miller with his imposing physical presence and his magnificent work in “Bronson”. But the search for the main cast did not end there. For the role of Furiosa, a process of casting equally exhaustive. Names of such famous actresses as Angelina Jolie and including singer Rihanna, auditioned for the role. Miller remembers Rihanna’s stunning appearance at the audition:

“Usually the actors show up dressed very casually, but wow, Rihanna looked stunning when she arrived. I’m not sure she was aware of the content of the movie, so she dressed like Rihanna, which was the right thing to do.”

Finally, the roles of Max and Furiosa fell to Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron respectively, who had a tense relationship during filming which led the actress to demand escort 24 hours a day, in anticipation of an attack by Hardy. The tension between both actors is palpable in the film, but as Buchan states in his book, it enriched the relationship of the characters on screen despite the real conflict between them.

Those willing to return to the crazy post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max will have the opportunity to do so with the release of the Fury Road prequel, “Mad Max: Furiosa” which will hit theaters next May 24, 2024.
