Donald Glover explains why Phoebe Waller-Bridge left Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Creator Reveals Phoebe Waller-Bridge Completely Rewrote Mr. & Mrs. Smith Series Pilot

After causing one of the most notorious Hollywood breakups between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and starting one of the most media-covered marriages, between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Sr. & Sra. Smith movie comes to Amazon Prime Video as a series. However, it cannot avoid controversy.

Just like the film, this series also sparked a creative divorce, this time between the two Mr. & Mrs. Smith protagonists, who were initially set to be Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However, Waller-Bridge decided to leave the project due to “creative differences,” which Glover has now explained openly.

I think we both never quite felt comfortable with each other. And that’s okay, that’s what happens when two people are used to being in charge. This series is too big for there to have been two captains,” explained Glover in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter for the series’ premiere.

“For example, she completely rewrote the already written pilot, and when I read it, I thought, ‘this isn’t my style.’ However, if the series had gone on with her as the main character and without me, we all would have said, ‘this series is f***ing amazing,” the actor stated. Nevertheless, Glover finally found a new partner, actress Maya Erskine.

Differences between Fleabag and Atlanta

But beyond the clash of the two strong personalities in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Donald Glover also believes that his differences with Phoebe Waller-Bridge come from their different ways of working. “It may also have been something cultural. For example, Fleabag is entirely written by her; in the UK, they don’t rely on teams of writers.”

“But in Atlanta, we were able to create an environment where we could say an idea was sh**ty, and it was okay. That’s how we got the best moments,” Glover recalled. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is now available on Prime Video.
