A goal by Ivory Coast’s Salomon Kalou in the second half of their match with Nigeria gave the team a surprise win at the African Cup of Nations.
In the first half it seemed Nigeria would score first having enjoyed more great chances to score in the early minutes. But the closest the Nigerian got the ball was to hitting the bar of the opposition’s goal.
After the break, Kalou dribbled past three players before wrong-footing the Nigerian goalkeeper to score from a close range. Kalou, Didier Drogba’s Chelsea teammate, scored the goal after 66 minutes in the game.
Ivory Coast considered Nigeria to be the most dangerous team and Nigeria itself was bragging of dominating the game. The two teams were also rivals in Group B. Ivory Coast’s next match will be with Benin on Friday, and Drogba is expected to be more ready and recovered from his injury. Many fans hope to have a Ghana-Ivory Coast cup final to see Chelsea’s Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien face-off with Drogba.
