(JT) Despite an early win against Zanzibar, the Ethiopian Under-17 football team performed poorly in the CECAFA U-17 Championships. Ethiopia was humiliated by the Ugandan team 4-0. The game got worse in the final minutes as Ethiopia gave up two goals in the last four minutes.
The tournament is being hosted by Sudan and it is the first international game staged in Juba, the capital city of the semiautonomous region of "South Sudan." These games also saw Ethiopia return back to international games after a brief ban by FIFA.
Despite this poor performance in the U-17, the Ethiopian team has recently won several CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup championships, the oldest football tournament in Africa. Out of the four cups Ethiopia won during the last 36 years, three of them came in the last eight years, making Ethiopia the most successful team since the new millennium.
Uganda is the most successful team in CECAFA history, having won the CECAFA cup 10 times. The Ugandan Under-17 team has been advancing thru the semifinals and it hopes to capture another win this week.
