Members of Ethiopia's national athletics team parade during the opening ceremony of the 2010 African Athletics Championships at the Nyayo stadium in the capital Nairobi, July 28, 2010.
Missing some of its top athletes at the 17th African Athletics Championships in Nairobi, team Ethiopia finished with 145 points and placed fourth in the medal table.

The Kenyans, who enjoyed homecourt advantage, dominated throughout the week and ended with ten gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals. Ethiopia outperformed most African teams by taking a gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

Nigeria came in second place in Africa with 198 points and 18 medals, followed by South Africa.

Ethiopia was without Olympic champions and superstars Kenenisa Bekele and Haile Gebreselassie as well as without famous young athletes Deresse Mekonnen and Tariku Bekele.

Tirunesh Dibaba brought the lone victory for Ethiopia by winning the 10,000m in 31min 51.39 seconds. Injuries prevented her from competing in the 5,000 meters in which Tirunesh owns the record. On Thursday in Nairobi, Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya won the 5,000m with a time of 16 minutes and 18 seconds; over two minutes lower than Tirunesh Dibaba's 5,000m world record of 14 minutes and 11 seconds.

the end is coming
whether we like it or not, our dominance in athletics is ending

- injuries afecting top runners

- motivation down because of corruption (tigre favoritism) in management

- new/young runners don't have killer instinct

- non-tigre top runners moving outside the country to arab and european countries

Ethiopia is Utopia
I would love to see how the true Ethiopia performs without the subject people(Oromo) of the empire!

Well, those athletes being dressed by the mafia and wrapped up with colorful propaganda political irrelevant flag from the top to the bottom while the main issue of sporting and sport activities were completely forgotten and totally abandoned. It is only a cheap show business and empty dancing in the rain for wayane minority dictatorship. How can people who are forced to be starving to death, disbanding and displaced from homes, communities and country have the deep nationalist and personal motivation to practice, compete and win?

No wonder Ethiopian talents are escaping to foreign countries like the middle east, Turkey, Sweden, Azerbaijan, etc. in order to fulfill their dreams than advertising and legitimizing the minority exclusionist dictatorship.

Ethiopia's Performance
Tariku did run and finished 7th in the 5k event. Haile has gone to the marathon full time and would not have done well in any of the track events. The only missing stars were Kenenisa and Deresse Mekonnen...and Deresse would not have been the favorite anyway.

I believe there were three factors for Ethiopia's underperformed:
1. Ethiopia's specialty events such as the 10k and 5k were contested by the home team Kenya and would be difficult to beat Kenya at home.

2. There are no new upcoming "dominant" runners coming up through the ranks. The signs were already there during the last Olympics where all the gold medals were won by either Tirunesh or Kenenisa.

3. The surge in the quality of Kenyan runners especially in the 5k. Vivian had already defeated the previously unbeatable Meseret Defar twice coming into the championship. Perhaps, this was due to the dip in form on Meseret's part as much as the improving Viviane.

One thing different about this champioinship from the past was that Ethiopia did send its top athets and did try to do well. A wakeup call for coming events.

Although we do not have athletes of the caliber Meseret, Tirunesh, and, Kenenisa... Meselech Melkamu and Sentayehu Ejigu have improved immensely. Imane Merga is also an athlete that will do well.
