(JT) Ethiopia's young and promising middle distance woman runner and indoors 1500m champion Gelete Burka has qualified for the final round of the 1500 meters at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin.
The other two Ethiopians qualifying for the 1500m are Meskerem Assefa and Kalkidan Gezahegne, who both run good times under 4 minute and 9 seconds.
The 23-year-old Gelete, who is from Arsi zone of Oromia like most of the top Ethiopian runners in history, hopes to redeem Ethiopian women, who have not produced a gold medal in Berlin as of Tuesday. Gelete's top opponent in Berlin is expected to be the Ethiopia-born Maryam Yusuf Jamal who runs for Bahrian. Maryam (original Oromo-Ethiopian name Zenebech Tola) also called Arsi zone of Oromia her home before she joined the Bahrain national team.
The two runners did not meet during the qualifying rounds as Maryam was in heat one and Gelete in heat two. However, Gelete's 4:07.75 has bettered Maryam's qualifying time of 4:08.76
According her official website, Maryam has set up a foundation to give back to her community in rural Ethiopia.
