(JT) The Double world and Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele once again brought gold to Ethiopia as Tirunesh Dibaba made a come back to competition just a day after the Ethiopian New Year. Kenenisa won the 3,000 metres at the world athletics final in Thessaloniki, Greece finishing in 8:03.79
It was the Kenyan-American Bernard Lagat again who was outsprinted by Kenenisa on Saturday to settle for yet another silver medal and assume the role of Sileshi Sihine. For many years, Ethiopia's Sileshi, who was nicknamed "The Silver Man," was famous for always finishing in second place after Kenenisa but he has been absent from many races since his marriage with Tirunesh in 2008.
In third place was Kenya's Sammy Mutahi, followed by Deresse Mekonnen of Ethiopia.
In the women's race, the Double Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba made the much anticipated return and took silver medal by clocking in a time of 15:25.92 at the 5000 Metres. Her compatriot Meseret Defar of Ethiopia recovered from her disappointing performance in Berlin by winning gold on Saturday in Greece. Even though Tirunesh ran a slow race, fans were pleased just to see Tirunesh back in the lineup.
One of the most accomplished women athlete in history, Tirunesh Dibaba owns the world record for the 5000 metres, which she finished in 14:11.15 last year. She is also a quadruple world champion in the 5k and 10k as well as a five time gold medalist in the World Cross Country Championships.
