(JT) In another disappointing performance by Meseret Defar of Ethiopia, she run almost 45 seconds off her 5000 meters pace during the World Athletics Championships on Saturday, losing to Kenyans once again. She finished in third place.
In one of the slowest 5000m races on the world stage, the winner Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya won the race finishing in 14 minutes and 57.97 seconds while the Kenyan Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet also passed Meseret Defar who seemed to have given up in the last second.
Meseret previously set the world 5000m record of 14 minutes and 16 seconds in 2007 but she run 14:58.41 on Saturday. The current world 5000m record holder Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia (14 minutes 11.15 seconds) did not participate in these games due to injury.
Ethiopia's third ranked 5000m runner Meselech Melkamu also underperformed in Berlin as she ran over half a minute slower than her personal best time of 14 minutes and 33 seconds. She ended up in fifth place on Saturday by running in a slow time of 15 minutes and 03.72 seconds.
Saturday's winner Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot has not run a 5000m below 14 minutes 35 seconds before, but her time was good enough for a gold in Berlin.
