Poll: Should Tilahun birthday and Irecha become Ethiopia's national holidays?

On October 5th, Ethiopia will celebrate its "National Flag Day." It is one of the new holidays added in the country's calendar. While Ethiopia has many religious holidays, non-religious holidays are very limited compared to in other countries. Many countries around the world celebrate the birthdays of historical, famous (and accomplished) individuals as well as have a "ThanksGiving Day" in the United States.

During this week in Ethiopia, the September 27 Birthday of the late famous musician Tilahun Gessesse (who sang in many languages for five decades) was marked and the Oromo thanksgiving festival of Irreechaa has been celebrated by millions of people. The columnist Tuji Jidda wrote on JT an article suggesting that Irreechaa should be on the Ethiopian federal calendar as an official national holiday and some people also believe the legendary singer Tilahun's birthday should become a national day.

Irreechaa festivities often take place on the first sunday after the Christian holiday of Meskal in Ethiopia. Next to Christianity and Islam, Irreechaa has the most followers of all "traditional beliefs" inside Ethiopia. It is most notably celebrated in Bishoftu town of Oromia where community leaders give thanks to God during the ceremony. Just like the ancient Gadaa democratic system of Oromo-Ethiopians (which is an African indigenous system and arguably the oldest democracy in the world), the monotheistic Oromo belief in Waaqa (God) also did not come from outside Africa, unlike Islam and Christianity. Thus, some Oromos believe that nationally commemorating such indigenous holidays from diverse cultures unites all Ethiopians and helps to redefine Ethiopian identity to make it inclusive.

In the United States, "Thanksgiving day" did not become a national holiday until many years later after the founding of the country. Should Irreechaa become a national holiday as "Thanksgiving Day" in Ethiopia like the secularized Thanksgiving Day in America?

Shamefull
hey man, first dont mix politics and religion. Politics is for this earth only. while religion is for ever.

Erecha is demons worship, wether u accept it or not. Neither christian nor Muslim do accept it. Bowing for an old tree and praying for a demon called korit ,by no means is accepted. Politics is one thing. I agree culture shall be respected. But culture which can make u thrown to hell shall never be promoted.

If u are for the welbeing of Oromo, please dont promote Erecha. Oromo is either Christain or Muslim, not idol worshiper.

hey man lets not fool ourself. dont we know what our mothers are doing for Erecha if u are true oromos.are u guys advising us to repeat that demon worshiping practice again.

Irrecha should be Oromiyan national holy day and Oromiyan government must declare it as such. It is not important for non Oromos to prescribe to it. The Oromiyan regional government must declare Irrecha day as Oromiyan national holy day on which offices remain closed on that day and Oromos celebrate Irrech. This is not Ethiopian issue. We have Christians and Muslims in every nation and nationalities of Ethiopia in that holidays that are related to both religions can be Ethiopian holy day. Irrecha is Waqefanna ritual and it is observed in Oromiya only so far. Till we get some converts among other Ethiopians we should not bother others to observe the day as a teir national national holy day.

Tilahun Geses lived non Oromo life. He was promoting Amhara culture and changed his identity from Oromo to that of Amara. He was not great lose as far as I am concerned to Oromo nation. Oromos lost no one in Thilahun. Let Neftegnas observe his birth day not us.
We Oromos need many local holy days of ourselves. Irrecha is one of them.

Irrecha is the symbol of oromos
Irrecha has to be national holiday! That is one way of strengthening unity. Actually, failure to celebrate irrecha as a national holiday is a good indicator that the Ethiopian leaders were and are biased to abysinia than the oromos who are the majority in that empire.

thanksgiving in habasha empire????
dear jimmaatimes,

the habashas have nothing to give thanks about in their empire
they have no principles, no trait of apreciating others or being engaged in democratic discourse

the habshas only know how to insult, backstab, beg (God or whitemen),hate and be lazzy

if they were not lucky with european weapons in 1800s, then 9/10th of amara/tigre population who waste their life as stupid MONKS wouldhave not survived in the competitive world

even in america, the habshas backstab eachother and be jealous of people sucess

"thanksgiving" is too foreign concept for habashas

I am a proud muslim oromo but I don't support the socaled "IRECHA" which is totally against the teaching of Islam. In fact it is a subbotage against the religion on one hand and one step back from progress for oromo people.
