Poll: Should Tilahun birthday and Irecha become Ethiopia's national holidays?

On October 5th, Ethiopia will celebrate its "National Flag Day." It is one of the new holidays added in the country's calendar. While Ethiopia has many religious holidays, non-religious holidays are very limited compared to in other countries. Many countries around the world celebrate the birthdays of historical, famous (and accomplished) individuals as well as have a "ThanksGiving Day" in the United States.

During this week in Ethiopia, the September 27 Birthday of the late famous musician Tilahun Gessesse (who sang in many languages for five decades) was marked and the Oromo thanksgiving festival of Irreechaa has been celebrated by millions of people. The columnist Tuji Jidda wrote on JT an article suggesting that Irreechaa should be on the Ethiopian federal calendar as an official national holiday and some people also believe the legendary singer Tilahun's birthday should become a national day.

Irreechaa festivities often take place on the first sunday after the Christian holiday of Meskal in Ethiopia. Next to Christianity and Islam, Irreechaa has the most followers of all "traditional beliefs" inside Ethiopia. It is most notably celebrated in Bishoftu town of Oromia where community leaders give thanks to God during the ceremony. Just like the ancient Gadaa democratic system of Oromo-Ethiopians (which is an African indigenous system and arguably the oldest democracy in the world), the monotheistic Oromo belief in Waaqa (God) also did not come from outside Africa, unlike Islam and Christianity. Thus, some Oromos believe that nationally commemorating such indigenous holidays from diverse cultures unites all Ethiopians and helps to redefine Ethiopian identity to make it inclusive.

In the United States, "Thanksgiving day" did not become a national holiday until many years later after the founding of the country. Should Irreechaa become a national holiday as "Thanksgiving Day" in Ethiopia like the secularized Thanksgiving Day in America?

grow up
If I were a businessman in debrezeite (beshefto), I will do every thing in my power to make it a national holiday, because it is good for business! Here in America, large corporation create and push non-existing holidays for the sake of promoting their product. In Ethiopia we are experts creating problems where there is none, instead, we should focus on real issues like removing the monster from power. All of you, who are against this oromo religion, just grow up!!!

I think Irecha should be a national holiday, but No need to make the birthday of a singer national holiday (don't get me wrong Tilahun is one of the best singer Ethiopia ever had).

In country of blinds one eyed man will be a king was the Ethiopian say in days gone by. Now, despite the fact he was a singer of all time, who in his right time came up with this suggestion? With due respect to the one who came up with this idea, I guess, we are really lost it

Live and Let Live
Oromos, like many other ethnic groups in today's Ethiopia have been around for several centuries. What we need to learn in this country is the principle of "Tolerance and Accommodation". Christians, muslims and wakefatas have co-existed for hundreds of years.Imposing ones faith and value on others is the root of most problems. Every group has the right to practice what has been handed down to them by their ancestors.Oromo's Irecha does not take away anything from christians or anybody else. It is nobody's business to judge weather something is right or wrong.Life will be much sweater if we could accept and respect groups for what they are, for Ethiopia is home for a diverse group of at least 300 languages. Let us celebrate Diversity and tap into their skills and talents.

agree patially
As you guys know, we have different holy days that are common to all people and considering both christian and Muslim religions. To me that is enough. We can celebrate Irreechaa in our region (Oromia) but I don't think it is important to make it federal.

As far as Tilahun, he is icon it is possible to remember him but having national holiday is not important as well. Though he is icon, there is no person in the history of ethiopia whose birthday is considered as national holy day. And Tilahun doesn't deserve his birth day to be national holy day. I don't agree on this.
