Poll: Peaceful or Armed struggle for democracy in Ethiopia?
Judge Birtukan Mideksa and Dr. Merera Gudina support peaceful struggle while Dr. Berhanu Nega and Dawud Ibsa favor armed struggle for change in Ethiopia.
The debate continues in Ethiopia on which method will bring democratic change in the country. After the imprisonment of the top opposition leader Judge Birtukan Mideksa and after the 2010 national election (which local and independent international observers said was stolen by the ruling party)- the chances of peaceful change has diminished. The failure of elections, the ongoing rights abuses and the Obama US administration's silence has made Ethiopians feel hopeless and betrayed.

On the other side, there appears to be no militarily effective armed struggle to bring change and remove the Meles Zenawi government. While the numerous peaceful opposition groups have united under the new "MEDREK" umbrella coalition, the armed oppisition groups remain divided politically, ethnically and ideologically as well as suffer with inner-party crisis. While some peaceful opposition movements have relatively gained nationwide grassroots support beyond religious, regional, clan and ethnic boundaries; the armed groups lack the nationwide mandate to rule the country even if they win militarily.

Discuss below what is the next step or the correct path to establish democracy in Ethiopia.

Democracy became ilussive while Abissynians remain in power. Anybody who deal with Habashas to bring democracy is either foolish or ignorant. The absynians have no democratic value in thier history. The only way to restore democracy in the south is to chase away the northern settlers who trriorize the people by gan.peaceful way is for those who understand peace not Abssynians who lived through war and choas. They understand only barrel of gun not ballot.

Peace by Peaceful means!
The peaceful struggle in Ethiopia is still young, and it is too early to talk about armed struggle. Indeed, unlike others I do believe that the only way that has been seriously tried in Ethiopia is change through violence. Have we ever had a successful and transformative change?... No! So why do we have to consider armed struggle? Non-violent/peaceful struggle takes several years but the change that comes through it is really transformative. Those living in Ethiopia and abroad pursuing peaceful struggle deserve support. Those advocating violence deserve condemnation! No more violence! Let's follow the path of Birtukan and Dr Merera and many others who opt for change and transformation by peaceful means! Let's not allow the breeding of another EPRDF by letting those talking about armed struggle.

peace,
Selam

If all parties are united as one, no matter what ethnicity they belong, and work firmly together in the direction “MEDREK” has started, there is no reason that we will not see change in Ethiopia soon. People, we are in the 21 century. ONLY HOME GRWEN OPOTITION and PEACEFULL STUGLE can bring convincible change and lasting democracy. Therefore, we have to join hands around peaceful struggle and support those at home.

hana,

you are wrong
MLK needed "violent" black groops to persuade white racists and mandela needed armed south african militants

we need a combo of peaceful and armed struggle

The virus must be illiminated
To be a peacefull nation we must be a nation not a collection of nations through gun point (ocupation).Does peacefull struggle bring freedom to those nations under ocupation? I think no. Then Armed struggle is a must option.
For those groups of nations struggling only to get ride of meles, yes peacefull struggle is the way.But for the nations under ocupation armed struggle has no alternative choice, the virus must be illiminated.

Armstruggle
Ethiopia shall never be free from the TPLF peacefully.

Those who talks and cry for peaceful changes must be out of their mind. By begging and demonstrating there is no a liberated nation. Learn from EPLF and Al shebab.

Well, at least keep talking the talking endlessly just to make it look like that one is after all doing some thing and busy may feel good.

This of course is a clear sign of 21st century cowardice and total lack of preplanned united decisiveness and action combined with gross irresponsibility to communities, societies and the whole nation. Why NOT tell the truth nothing but the truth, stating." we are too old, too much token security seeking, afraid to device and challenge the dictatorship like any political oppositions any where. Why risk personal and family welfare and well being, even if being unjustifiably exploited by Aliens from the outer space" etc. excuses after excuses. The fact of the matter is that such aging middle class fat cats used to the relative comfort of life and livings will always prefer to capitulate and render victory to the chest pumping armed dictatorial opponent rather than unite and bravely challenge the robber totalitarian dictators and transform societies and communities for the better. Actually this form of unique cowardice and capitulationist docile mentality in the face of gross injustices seems to be typical in that country who compensate their failures by the usual big academic sounding fancy talks and offering an imaginary cakes high up in the sky as well a recycling secret Wayane instigated old junks as to the merits or demerits of Armed or peaceful struggles.

Now that Wayane has won the main battle by robbing the peoples voices while at the same time rendering the so called oppositions totally impotent and action less Wayane will now focus on secretly initiating and planting worn out and useless old debate while also itself secretly arguing on both sides of the debate just like in a cock fight tragic comedy in which both the competing cocks up against each others throats are in fact being owned by the Wayanes themselves. Hmm...

You say that these "peaceful" oppositions have more mass base than the others. FALSE! They have only 0.4% mass or grassroots support.

With that totally insignificant level, you will never win anything even to the end of the planet earth other than falsely entertaining yourself and serving the Wayane agenda that is getting complete totalitarianist by each passing days.

Peaceful and armed struggles are mutually supportive instruments of social change and and democracy.

So, one need not keep burying heads deep inside the desert sand dunes just like the proverbial Ostrich, wasting scarce time and other resources just to divert attention from the urgent issues facing 80 million wretched Ethiopians forced to be begging for Manna from the heavens while owning abundant natural, human resources and strategic resources. :)

Truth will triumph in the end, not war. Politicians have to learn to abide by truth. They must speak truth at any cost. Some are already paying the price but that is godly. Power without truth will haunt the power-monger, powerful or power-holder because God is with and for those who work for truth, justice, peace and reconciliation.
