Only 19 years old Kalkidan Gezahegne of Ethiopia poses with her gold medal as she listens to her national anthem on the podium for the medal ceremony of the women's 1500m at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships at the Aspire Dome in the Qatari capital Doha on March 14, 2010.
Not many things have changed in Ethiopia, a country of contrasts and diversity. Decades have passed but Ethiopia still has millions of people depending on food aid. And like the 1980s dictatorship of Mengistu Hailemariam who claimed 98% election victory, the latest regime of Meles Zenawi has similarly claimed over 99% election victory. Conflicts also persist in some parts of the nation.
Fortunately, Ethiopia's domination of the athletics world has not changed over the years as well. And the status quo is likely to stay with the recent success and arrival of new runners NOT with famous names like Haile, Kenenisa, Meseret, Tirunesh Dibaba and Sileshi, or even Deresse and Tsegay Kebede.
