Western diplomats support Meles as 450 jailed, 7 more killed in Ethiopia
For many Ethiopians, the Obama administration has kept the same Bush policy in the horn of Africa by supporting the Meles Zenawi government despite massive human rights abuses.
  • Ethiopian opposition parties say nearly 450 of their members have been jailed
  • "Despite accusations of a crackdown on dissent, diplomats in the capital say the West would be comfortable with Meles staying on" - Reuters

(Reuters) Despite accusations of a crackdown on dissent, diplomats in the capital say the West would be comfortable with Meles staying on -- as long as he remains a loyal ally in the volatile Horn of Africa and liberalises his potentially huge economy.

Secular Ethiopia is Washington's key supporter in the region and sent troops into neighbouring Somalia in 2006 to oust an Islamist group which had seized the capital.

"Most Western governments want Meles to continue because there is no alternative in the opposition," said one diplomat in Addis Ababa who did not want to be named.

"As long as the elections are semi-democratic, they'll probably stay quiet, keep giving aid, hope for liberalisation of the economy and leave full democracy for later," he said.

Foreign investors, who are showing interest in exporting commodities and exploring Ethiopia for probable oil and gas deposits, want stability, analysts say. If the opposition takes power, the future would be uncertain and investments delayed as foreign governments and lenders jostle for influence.

Rich nations are also hoping the government will relinquish control of its potentially lucrative telecommunications and banking industries in a nation of more than 80 million people.

Ethiopia opposition says nearly 450 members jailed

(Reuters) - Ethiopian opposition parties say nearly 450 of their members have been jailed to stop them running as candidates in national elections in May next year.

Documents given to Reuters by four opposition parties listed the prisoners' names, the dates on which they were arrested and the jails in which they were being held.

One party, the All Ethiopia Unity Organisation (AEUO), has recorded seven murders of members over the last 12 months that it says were politically motivated.

"These jailings are to stop our members running in elections," Gizachew Shiferaw, deputy leader of the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party, told Reuters. "It has become a strategy for the ruling party. Ethiopia is a one-party state."

target his supporters like the Taliban
Taliban has gained unquestionable respect from the western powers because of their determination and courage to defend themselves. Recently they have stepped up their resistance and forced the West to concede defeat and thus resort to other means to appease the Taliban. US, UK and others are trying to woo Taliban members and leaders to join the government in a multimillion dollar bribe. This shows that as long as we are not able to mount convincing resistant against TPLF through armed struggle, we are going to reap the fruit of our idleness. The west is happy with Meles because he is a trustworthy marionette who has no interest in his country or people- a trait that perfectly fits the interest of the western countries. So my friends the only way out of the current dilemma is to target all credible enemies wherever they are- it does not matter whether they are primary targets like TPLF or tertiary targets his satanic supporters.

please bomb those embassies!
IN times like these, we all wish these diplomats and embassies are bombed! may God save our people from these TPLF killers and their western financers

i hate violence, i hate terrorism. i hate OLF, i hate EPPF and i hate all armed groups but when these diplomats tell us they support bloodthirsty zenawi regime thatkilling us, i pray they get what they deserve!

we all know Europe, UK, Obama, the WEST is the DIRECT armer and financer of the TPLF criminal and terrorist regime so it would be self-defense to kill these westerners

so many thousands of our people have died already due to these westerners
how many more have to die? do we have to wait until our direct families are killed before we take action?

we must know our real enemies or we will remain oppressed forever

I think unprepared opposition is very bad for the country. Always weak opposition is what a party on power prays for. Meles is always donating golden umbrella to Axum Mariam for this very reason. Meles managed to create many PDOs from different ethnic groups and work with them While people like Marara and Obbo bulch failed to work as one Oromo party. Today they are more comfortable with people like
Gabru and Seye than with each other. Keep Meles on power for the sake of unity and growth. The rest are just village politicians who can not make any sounding association. I think Meles put 450 people behind bar. If it was one of these Neftegnas they will never have rest until they make sure they are dead and be behind life. Not only international community I too support Meles and his party for the next election for the same reason as theirs.

Ridiculous
You guys are ridiculous. You think your idea and thinking is the only right way. Anyone against you or not doing to your satisfaction is wrong. Criticizing Obama? Do you know anything about Obama? Why you are not supported should be very clear by now. First and foremost is that you are not even known by Oromo people. You have defined your own Oromo tribe and territory that is not even known by our Oromo brothers and sisters living in Ethiopia and working for the good of the country at the same time securing their national interest and rights. Second thing, you don't have even any idea or thinking to prove to the rest of the world what your goal and objectives are. Third and most is that, you are few power mongers who would like to enslave the Oromo people for your own selfish cause. So stop your gibberish and nonsense bluff on the net.
