Prime Minister Meles Zenawi accused the UDJ party of collaborating
with and sheltering OLF members inside its party. UDJ is one of the six parties
inside the MEDREK coalition. After the UDJ ex-president Birtukan Mideksa resigned
last month, the former member of the Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization
(OPDO) Dr. Negasso Gidada has become the new leader of UDJ.
During the recent parliament session, where the UDJ has only
one seat, Meles warned opposition MP Girma Seifu that police is monitoring OLF
operatives hiding under the legal opposition. Meles said it has arrested
alleged OLF members who also claimed UDJ membership. He said dissidents are not
allowed to be members of both legal and illegal political groups.
In recent years, the OLF has began to work with other opposition groups, including with non-Oromo Ethiopian organizations, to achieve change of government in Addis Ababa.
According to Meles, the other alleged OLF members arrested
confessed they are also supporters of the Oromo People Congress (OPC) legal party led by
Dr. Merera Gudina. But Gudina said Meles is looking for a scapegoat in case a Tunisia-style revolt against dictatorship occurs in Ethiopia.
