Oromo pilot of doomed Ethiopian plane remembered

Habtamu Benti was at the controls when the Ethiopian Airlines plane plunged into the Mediterranean last week. Habtamu Benti, the pilot of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409, is believed to have died along with six other crew and 83 passengers when the plane plunged into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Lebanon.

Jalene Gemeda of VOA’s Afan Oromo language broadcasting in the Horn of Africa service, knew him as they grew up together in Nekemte. She interviewed several members of Habtamu’s family, his friends, colleagues at the airline and former flying school classmates.

The plane was Ethiopian, the pilot was also Ethiopian. It was unfortunate for all the citizenes of Ethiopia. We are saddenned by what happened to the pilots, to all crew members and to all who were in that plane. God have mercy on their soul. Long live Ethiopia!!!
