OFC Oromo activist killed by Zenawi militia in Oromia, Ethiopia
Two Medrek members have been killed and many more harassed during the 2010 bloody pre-election period. Atleast 200 opposition supporters were shot dead by Zenawi's forces during the previous 2005 election in Ethiopia.

  • A campaigner for the opposition party Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) of the Medrek coalition group was killed by a militia of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The ruling party of Mr. Zenawi is preparing for the upcoming May election by intimidating the opposition, using employment and food as a weapon for votes and utilizing its media monopoly to divide the opposition.

An Ethiopian opposition activist was beaten to death by pro-government militia in the western part of the country after he refused to stop campaigning for his party before May 23 elections, an opposition leader said.

Beyanza Deba was killed while campaigning for the Oromo Federalist Congress, part of Ethiopia’s Medrek opposition alliance, near the western town of Ambo when four members of a militia aligned with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s ruling party beat him on April 7, said Merara Gudina, a member of parliament and chairman of the OFC. He died of his injuries on April 16 after being hospitalized in the capital, Addis Ababa.

“He died campaigning,” Merara said in a phone interview today from Harar in eastern Ethiopia. “This is the militia of the government trying to block rural campaigning.”

Bulcha Demeksa, a leader of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), told Reuters the activist, Biyansa Daba, was attacked at home by members of the ruling party.

"Biyansa Daba was beaten on April 7 with the butt of a gun," Bulcha said. "He died in hospital on April 16. He was a very strong up and coming figure."

American Idol: David Cook was ’shocked by Ethiopia in a positive way’
April 19th, 2010 by Lisa McGarry. Tags: American Idol, David Cook

Former American Idol winner David Cook has been talking about his recent trip to Ethiopia, for this weeks American Idol charity based show ‘Idol Gives Back.’ While in Ethiopia, Cook visited the United Nations’ Biruh Tesfa (Bright Future) Project to see firsthand how the UN Foundation is supporting the work of the UN to educate and empower girls.

In an interview with Digital Spy, the “Come Back to Me” singer revealed that he was shocked by what he saw in the African country, but not in the way he expected to be. He said:

“I have to say I was completely shocked by this country in an extremely positive way. When you hear Africa, I immediately think impoverished and everything that goes with that. But I came here, and the people here are so amazingly sweet. They are such nice people, very accommodating and get that we are out here trying to help. The city itself, Addis Ababa, is beautiful – really lush, very green. It definitely has an infrastructure in place. I think it’s just a matter that they just need that kind of boost in the right direction
