Meles says "Zero chance" Birtukan will be released for 2010 Ethiopia election
Meles Zenawi

  • Meles said there is “zero” chance that opposition leader Birtukan Mideksa will be released from prison in time to compete in the elections.
  • Meles could stay in power five more years

(Bloomberg) Meles, who is 54 and has been in power since 1991, reiterated an April 2008 pledge that he would like to step down after next year’s elections. He indicated he would stay for part of an additional five-year term if his ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front requests it.

He said he would resign from the ruling party only as a matter of “fundamental principle” and not over a small difference in how long he should remain in office.

“My guess is this is going to boil-down to plus or minus a year or two,” he said. “I’m simply thinking aloud. Now if it were to boil-down to plus or minus a year or two, I would probably say this is not a matter on which I ought to leave the party.”

It’s also possible, “some would say very likely” that he will be succeeded as prime minister by a person from outside the Tigrayan ethnic group, Meles said.

Veterans of Meles’ Tigray People’s Liberation Front, a rebel group from northern Ethiopia that helped defeat Ethiopia’s Communist Derg government in 1991, form the core of the current ruling party. Though Tigrayans make up just six percent of the country’s population, they dominate the upper levels of Ethiopia’s civilian and military leadership.

Meles said there is “zero” chance that opposition leader Birtukan Mideksa will be released from prison in time to compete in the elections scheduled for next May. He also said Birtukan’s jailing is not a pretext to eliminate political opposition.

Birtukan, a leader of the now-defunct Coalition for Unity and Democracy alliance, was first jailed along with more than 120 other opposition leaders, activists, and journalists after unrest following Ethiopia’s disputed 2005 elections.

Government Pardon

Birtukan was freed under a government pardon in 2007, before being put back in jail under a life sentence in December after she denied requesting the earlier amnesty. Her supporters say she was jailed because of the growing popularity of her new party, Unity for Democracy and Justice.

The prime minister also defended local elections last year, in which opposition candidates won just three of 3.6 million seats, saying that “democracy is about process, it’s not about outcome.”
Ethiopia’s largest remaining opposition parties withdrew in advance of the poll, citing government intimidation.

“If the process is clean and you get zero, tough luck,” he said.

The 2010 Election & Birtukan Mideksa
Without much ado let me point out the following 3-decisive key notes:

(1) Obviously, ‘change’ we definitively need! In Obama’s foot-spore let me say: “Yes we can!” Just like the Iranian youth world wide are fighting for reform, for change and for a renewed life in Iran, we Ethiopians must also stand behind Birtukan Mideksa and her party for greater change to come.

(2) Yes, men have thus far done their share for Ethiopia. It is time to give way for a woman leadership and see what a woman like Birtukan Mideksa can do for boosting the audasity of change in Ethiopia.

(3) We must remain vigilant for unconditional release of Lady Liberty Birtukan Mideksa so that she is able to take part during the forthcoming 2010 election

when will tigres stop supporting dictator?
the strange thing abut the current situation in ethiopia is that tigres still support meles despite his inyour face tyranny

are tigres blind or don't care about others?? how many more "terms" is this dictatr going to "elect" himself?

i feel bad for the tigres who blindly folow him, (not for the powerhungry officials who benefit financially)
the ordinary tigre who gets no benefit but STILL supports zenawi is the biggest puzzle of all

Non-sense comments from sensless people
You know, I want to participate in this websites discussion, but when I see some non-sense and racist comments from some of the people who participate, I cannot tell you how I feel...

Most of you who give comments in this are ignorant (needless to say)! You pretend as if you think more about Ethiopia and the People of Ethiopia, but you are blind Diaspora who thinks about yourself only. I don't know what has blinded your mind. To your surprise, there is no bright and intelligent leader (and individually person) like meles zenawi. In addition to this, please don't insult the people of tigray blindly. To play well in your dirty polictcs, you can focus on the leaders who you think are from tigray. Insulting the people of tigray will give you of no use.

Meles always works for the best of our country Ethiopia. Those of you who do not want to see good things going on in Ethiopia, shame on you, and you can live there abroad in some ones country. But, let us live our country live peacefully, and don't disturb the peace we have right now which is unforeseen in centuries.

May the brilliant Melese be elected again and lead Ethiopia to the bright future!
