Meles: Ethiopia could have disintegrated like Yugoslavia - EF interview

In an exclusive interview with the Diaspora-based independent Ethiopian media "Ethiopia First" (EF),  Prime Minister Meles Zenawi says Ethiopia would have broken apart like Yugoslavia if the people did not value Ethiopianness (Ethiopiawinet) enough to keep the country together. However, Meles claimed Ethiopian unity is deep and firmly established, particularly as its people value its economic potential and stronger national security that comes with having a large population and land. But Meles warned that if Ethiopia can not accommodate and celebrate religious, ethnic and national diversity, its source of strength will be gone.

EF's Editor, whose father is Oromo, said people are concerned that the current government's policy is institutionalizing and promoting negative ethnic awareness but Meles said diversity is Ethiopia's source of strength and Ethiopianness should not require abandoning Oromo or other identity since it was built based on common interests and mutual benefits.

He gave these answers in response to questions on whether his ruling party's ethnic federalism policy is putting the unity and survival of Ethiopia in danger.

Questioned about the millions of Ethiopians who need food aid this year and why the country failed to achieve self-sufficiency, Meles said Ethiopia has proportionally performed much better because its population has more than doubled since the 1984 famine, which he asserted was equivalent to adding the population of large African countries like Kenya and Tanzania into Ethiopia.

This guy was scared for sure.
He could have asked him some though questions like fraud in the election, why did he allow Eritrea to split, why is he putting innocent people in jail for expressing their political view, why is he stealing from ethiopia to build tigray and many more questions.

He said that his father is Oromo. He obviously doesn't think he's Oromo. He was more worried about amhara and tigray. This whole interview is planned by meles zerowi.

Please don't post garbage like this for your audience.

Oromia shall be free!

if any party is against the total implementation of the full rights of nations and nationalities in ethiopia it definitely DEAD ON ARRIVAL.
By now it is an open secret that UDJ and MEDREK are trying desperately to hijack the fruits of peoples struggle for justice and equality under a bogus slogan of ethiopianism.

Double talk
Meles believes he is the smartest man on earth and this gradiosity will undoubtedly land him in a place he may not like. He flatly denied there is famine and we saw pictures of emeciated children from southern Ethiopia. He said ethiopianess is strong and yet there are wars be it low level, going on in Oromia and Ogaden and in Gander...one would ask if why is this?
He said mutual respect and co-existence is for the betterment of all ethnics...now how is it possible yesterdays beggars are running multi-million companies while those who were doing good business are run down to the earth?
regarding diaspora, he said good job has not been done...Ok I agree, but how is he going to change this? By just granting interviews to those who call him master...or by coming and taking hard questions from the members of diaspora? Why he avoids debate with his political opponents? Only his foot soldiers are the one who seem to conduct debate with the opposition. If he wants to restore his image he should dig deep into himself and his state of mind when he was at rat Kilo campus....he sure talked in those days...without fear.
Any ways I am looking forward to his retirement from his position, perhaps then, the country would have more open media and political discourse.

Did you get it?
Ethiopia was built on the sand. lol This is definitely right because it was imposed on us and it always empowers the self-interested Habashas on our own homeland (Oromia) .

Wake up! fight for your right!

Viva United Oromo Diaspora!!!!!

Oromia Shall be and Will be free!!!

The journalist did not raise the issues like media freedom, political prisoners, the government sabotages in the legal system of the country, the electoral commission, the monopoly of businesses by EPRDF enterprises and pro-EPRDF individuals and so on. He asked the same question that the government journalists asked Meles again and again. Meles is a brutal man even to his own comrades during the struggle. What happened to Tamrat, Siye, Aregawi Berhe, Shawit and so many others is living evidence. How do we expect this man to be kind for other Ethiopians? Please do not be fooled by Meles over again. We don’t know him better than Siye or others like him. He is shrewd to use people for his own agenda and then throw them out. The current regional presidents and other officials will be thrown out after some time after being charged by corruption, terrorism and so on. You can see what is happing to the former army generals and officials. Meles has put himself as an irreplaceable figure in the EPRDF system. He has chased all those who could have been a challenge to him and his ambition. A mark of true leadership is reconciliation. If Meles is a good person, he would have agreed to arrange a national forum where by any political group, that claim to have resentment on the political system, to come and discuses its differences. It seems too foolish to expect Meles to bring national consensus and understanding for the development of the country. After staying for almost most twenty years, He is still the same. He has no plan to engage every Ethiopian in the political and economic system. He is not willing to extend his hand to opposition leaders even for those who chose a peaceful political struggle. He works behind the scene to disintegrate them. He loves to death to show the opposition parties to be weak and incompetent to take power and lead the country. But as he repeatedly claimed, he wishes to see a strong opposition movement. What He is doing and what he claims in public is irreconcilable. Is good to be optimistic but it may not help us with Meles this person should be removed with possible means before bringing additional mess to the country. I wish he himself acknowledge his misdeeds and leave power peacefully. If he is really what he speaks of himself he will do that.
