In a letter, the Ethiopian opposition party Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) gave its standpoint regarding some parts of the FDD-MEDREK manifesto which it disagrees with.
Meanwhile, The UDJ and other opposition parties inside the FDD/MEDREK coalition have agreed on several principles to form the biggest and a united opposition group for the 2010 election to challenge the Tigray dominated ruling party of Meles Zenawi. The FDD is created by all the diverse and major opposition parties in Ethiopia representing various ideologies, ethnicities and groups. Most importantly, all opposition parties inside FDD have agreed to work together to struggle for democracy and to establish democratic and independent institutions in Ethiopia for the first time.
The coalition members state that the FDD establishing independent institutions in Ethiopia would set a foundation for the country's future where people's voice can be heard and respected, so that people in Ethiopia can freely vote for and be governed by their preferred form of government for the first time.
According to some sources, the current ruling party in Ethiopia is creating more unknown and fake opposition parties. Lidetu Ayalew's EDP and several unknown individuals claiming to represent the CUD, UDJ and ONC have been created and supported by the current government in Addis Ababa in order to divide the FDD for the upcoming 2010 election. These fake opposition groups claiming to represent EDP, CUD, UDJ and ONC have been given the most media coverage by the state-run ETV in order to attack the real opposition parties under FDD umbrella.
According to FDD chairman Dr. Merara Gudina, the Ethiopian people nationwide, all western embassies in Addis Ababa and the international community are well aware of the situation and about the government's new tactics of creating fake opposition parties. Opposition sources claim that all major parties are currently united under FDD to boycott the upcoming election and cause a one-party election unless the ruling party of Meles Zenawi can establish an independent election board, independent security force and adhere to other pre-conditions before the 2010 election.
