(VOA/By Tewelde WeldeghebrielWashington DC ) The first American man to win the New York City Marathon since 1982 was born in
Eritrea. His time in last Sunday's race was 2 hours, 9 minutes and 15 seconds.
Mebrahtom Keflezighi told VOA`s Tigrigna reporter, Tewelde Weldegebriel, that
he had been away from his family training around New York state by running 150
miles per week for the last six months. Mebrahtom came to the United States from the small East African country,
Eritrea, with his family when he was 12. He graduated in 1994 from San Diego
High, where he first made headlines as a runner. Mebrahtom won a silver medal in
the 2004 Athens Olympics. - VOA
