"Ark of the Covenant" about to be unveiled in Ethiopia?
Abuna Paulos, patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia

  • Ethiopian patriarch tells pope he will show artifact to world

(WND) The patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia says he will announce to the world Friday the unveiling of the Ark of the Covenant, perhaps the world's most prized archaeological and spiritual artifact, which he says has been hidden away in a church in his country for millennia, according to the Italian news agency Adnkronos.

Abuna Paulos, in Italy for a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI this week, told the news agency, "Soon the world will be able to admire the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible as the container of the tablets of the law that God delivered to Moses and the center of searches and studies for centuries."

The announcement is expected to be made at 2 p.m. Italian time from the Hotel Aldrovandi in Rome. Pauolos will reportedly be accompanied by Prince Aklile Berhan Makonnen Haile Sellassie and Duke Amedeo D'Acosta.

"The Ark of the Covenant is in Ethiopia for many centuries," said Pauolos. "As a patriarch I have seen it with my own eyes and only few highly qualified persons could do the same, until now."
According to Pauolos, the actual Ark has been kept in one church, but to defend the treasure, a copy was placed in every single church in Ethiopia.

He said a museum is being built in Axum, Ethiopia, where the Ark will be displayed. A foundation of D'Acosta will fund the project.

The Ark of the Covenant is the sacred container of the Ten Commandments as well as Aaron's rod and a sample of manna, the mysterious food that kept the Israelites alive while wandering in the wilderness during their journey to the promised land.

The Bible says the Ark was built to the specifications of God as He spoke to Moses. It was carried in advance of the people and their army by priests. It was also carried in a seven-day procession around the walled city of Jericho.

The idea that the Ark is presently in Ethiopia is a well-documented, albeit disputed, tradition dating back to at least 642 B.C. The tradition says it was moved to Elephantine Island in Egypt, then to Tana Kirkos Island in Ethiopia and finally to its present site at St. Mary's of Zion Church in Axum.

Ethiopians believe it is destined to be delivered to the Messiah when He reigns on Mount Zion – the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 3:16 points to a time when the Ark will vanish not only physically, but from the minds of the people: "And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more."

The Book of Revelation says the Ark is in the temple of God in heaven (Rev. 11:19). Muslim scholars say it will be found near the end of times by the Mahdi – a messianic figure in Islam.

Skeptical
I am very skeptical about the authenticity of this 'Ark'. Besides... it doesn't belong the the 'Christian Church' -- it belongs to the Children of Israel and it should be given back to them. Let them authenticate it if it's real perhaps it can be placed in the 3rd Temple one day. If it's a fake -- then the world will know.

This is blessing!
Berhanu, how dare you Insult the holly father Abune Paulos! You know, you have the previledge not to believe christianity or whatever, but what will this insult benefit you? Please avoid such silly things from your mind so that you can live peacefully with others!!!

As for the ark, personally I have been believing that it is in Axum, but if we can now see it, it will be interesting. In religion, believing is seeing, but in the todays world, where people are becomming secular, seeing is believing. So, it will will be impressive if people can see it. Moreover, it will be one big means of income to our country Ethiopia!

May God of the saints be with us all, Amen!

The genuine arc is not destined to be even touched by such an evil cadre of woyyane, if it realy is true that this man saw it and how ever is alive then it must be a fake one.
You can cheat those who now nothing about the bible.
Mordechai, worry not the real arc will turn back to God's people at it's own time.

That is good news
I am very sceptical of the sotry that the Ark exists, but on the other hand why would the honourable Parriarch Abuna Paulos make that up. It must be true, the Ark exists and it is in our country. If that is true the whole Christian worl flock to Ethiopia. I am hopping it will be well protected and guarded by the gov.

Are theses people ever thought of working hard and make a living, rather than relaying on tourist and aid. Come on guys, when it comes to tourist, it has to be things that is impressive which make people say wow and even after they left the seen it will still be in their mind. What is this Ark thing you talk about that never seem to be true just like your 3000 years history. Get on your feet and stop finding away to beg for a food.

Question, why are these people always find a way to connect themselves to the history of relegion and when the world do not even recognize them.

There is a lot of ways to make a living, one is by being yourself, which is you have no history and it doesn't hurt to start from here.

In Bible:
In the Bible, 2 Macabees 2:5-8 (Macabees a book of the bible included in Catholic canon but only in some protestant canon) says that Jeramiah hid the ark in a cave in Mt. Nebo and that it was to remain hidden until "God gathers his people together again and shows them his mercy"

Perhaps toward the end of the world the ark will be recovered because many jews will come to accept Jesus as Christ. St. Paul speaks about the coming of Christ being suspended ebcause a hardening of hearts has come upon the jews. Its my understanding that this time of mercy spoken of in Macabees 2:5-8 is the time when many Jews will come to accept Christ as messaih.
