Oromo struggle in Ethiopia has changed says OSA President, defends Berhanu Nega
Dr. Haile Hirpa, OSA President
In an interview with OLF media, the President of the Oromo Studies Association (OSA) defended the participation of Dr. Berhanu Nega in OSA's recent conference and declared that Oromo struggle has transformed into Ethiopian struggle.

OSA president Dr. Haile Hirpa said "Oromo people's struggle can not proceed as before." Oromo people "must work together with other Ethiopian forces who want to change the government and democratize the country" added Dr. Haile Hirpa.

Dr. Berhanu Nega is the leader of the Diaspora based Ginbot 7 organization which opposes the current Meles Zenawi government of Ethiopia. Analysts say diaspora based Oromo and other politicians want to follow the example of Oromia based groups like MEDREK (Forum for Justice and Democratic Dialogue) which has managed to unite opposition forces by breaking ethnic, regional and ideological barriers.

But OSA's decision has been condemned by right-wing OLF supporters. One pro-OLF Oromo media criticized Dr. Haile Hirpa for allowing Dr. Berhanu to speak at the OSA conference. The media, Oromo Affairs Blog, said Berhanu is an Ethiopianist politician and his participation is not scholarly.

"OSA had no business organizing meetings for politicians to assist them in dissemination of their political views," it said.

However, supporters of OSA's leadership said diversity should be welcomed inside OSA.

Oromo-Ethiopian Political analyst Jawar Siraj Mohammed said "We cannot claim to fight against sociopolitical and economic exclusion while at the same time advocating self-marginalization." He said "a scholarly organization is not a fraternity or exclusive club where only select like-minded individuals can congregate." Another Oromo analyst Kemal Abdisa supported OSA's decision and added that Oromo unity has a strong foundation that can not be broken by exposure to non-Oromo scholars. "We Oromos are not gullible children who need guardians from foreign ideas," said Kemal.

The latest controversy inside OSA and among OLF supporters reflects growing division in the Oromo diaspora. In 2006, former OSA officials warned about the OSA's "regression from a scholarly organization to partisan politics with one function of the splintered OLF cadres as the show-masters." Analysts say the recent invitation of Berhanu Nega indicated the dispute between OLF factions. According to a reporter on Oromo Affairs Blog, the current OSA leadership supports one faction of OLF against other OLF factions that oppose the reformation of OLF.

I strongly support Dr Haile's postion
The main problem of Oromo struggle is isolating it self from the real world. Let alone the outsiders those who are living with us the Oromos never know what really Oromo wants. It was our responsibility to let evry body knows what we want. If we invite any body who is intersted we will be able to know what they think about us and we can challenge them.We don't have to afriad the opinion of others. If dr. Berhanu stands againest the Oromo interst we will tell him you are wrong. A tru politician should know what others.

So please don't be disturbed by Dr Berhanu's opinion

Bravo Dr Haile.I appericiate your frankness

Is this the new face of OSA?
Yes, the genuine struggle of the Oromo Nation had been through lots of shenanigans and back-door dealings. We do remember vividly, the 1999 coup d’etat with in the OLF leadership, an individual day dream for the peace agenda in 2000, the Eritrean sponsored attack on OLA southern command in 2002, Bergen conference in 2004 in preparation for the famous surrendering of the original Kaayyoo of OLF, and AFD in 2006 and the infamous Asmara Group’s lawsuit against OLF and their losses, and ....the list goes on and on. I know it is repetitious cycle with no end in sight!!!

All the above abortive attempts were/are being initiated by individuals who are disguising as a true Oromoo Nationalists and leaders. But it is the first time to be twisted by a person who could not pass even the 12 grade High School leaving certificate known as "MATRIK" at home, let alone Ph.D. Yes, while growing up we the off-springs of Abbaa Gadaa of western Oromia used to believe alike. But not to the extent of this new OSA leader who appears to head the new "Paradigm-Shift".

Overall, what ever the reason is for Haile Hirpa to say ..."that Oromo struggle has transformed into Ethiopian struggle..."the following was what was written on Sudan Tribune in 2007 under the title of "The conundrum of Ethiopianism". Enjoy the reading.

The conundrum of Ethiopianism
Tuesday 22 May 2007 Send
By Yaadasaa Dafaa

May 21, 2007 — Educated or none educated Ethiopian often indulge themselves in the conundrum of Ethiopian-ism. This could be an asset for those individuals who happen to born from the oppressing Abyssinian nationalities such as Amharas and Tigray, including for the off-springs of the oppressed Nationalities within the empire who were baptized or educated/brain washed to accept themselves as Ethiopians despite what their ancestors went through in the hands the conquering army of Tewodros, Menelik or Haile Silasie. But what is Ethiopian-ism? How real is this concept or feeling? Is it a share feeling of belonging or an imposed one? Whose interest does it serves?

Even if we can come back to what is the concept of Ethiopian-ism, first and for most the so called Educated circles/class of Ethiopians fails to accept the reality that not all the people who happen to born in that territory known as Ethiopia/Abyssinia are choosing not to view themselves positively as Ethiopians or Abyssinian. For most of us those who are the offspring of the oppressed people of “Ethiopia/Abyssinia” accepting our selves as Ethiopians or Abyssinian means similar to an African American accepting the norm that he/she is a second class citizen of USA by covering intentionally all the past historical events that shaped him/her to be what he/she is today. . That is neither right for African Americans, or for the North East African citizens.

In the cases of African Americans, Numerous black history Books and different articles at the pedagogical, and entertainment levels are made available to the USA citizens, and to those all who are interested to learn, read, carryout researches on the Historical events involving African Americans background without twisting the facts of what actually took place during those dark ages of slavery. Abundant publications, films and documentaries emerged and are encouraged at the federal level with so many different remedial programs to address those grievances. These conciliatory steps are producing very positive results in addressing those historical grievances if not yet totally have solved it. Furthermore, It definitely remains to be one of the most highly encouraged endeavors undertaken at the governmental, and basic societal organizations levels aimed at strengthening social cohesion, and the spirit of patriotism for all USA citizens who are sharing more senses of belonging to US citizenship by this generation (of US citizens) than the previous ones. More is to be done and will be done as it remains to be part of the law of the land.

On the other side, within the learned section of Ethiopian society it took another turn. These educated circles of Ethiopians need to the accept the reality of the existing cultural, and various societal differences within the country. Accepting the diversity is quite acceptable and could be positively manipulated for strength and prosperity of the country. At the same time there should be a forum to conduct a productive researches for Scientific or logically conducive solutions with integrity and professional ethics. But the so-called educated classes of Ethiopia often leave these burning and very divisive National questions in the hands of their blind military personnel, non democratically elected bureaucrats, or dictators who will stop at nothing from repeating the same or worst crimes of what their conquering fathers did on the oppressed Nations and Nationalities with in the prisons of Nations in African territory known as Ethiopia. As the matter of the facts, they (the Educated Ethiopians) directly or indirectly bless, encourage, and are readily utilized as a tool for continuing the domination, exploitations, and colonization of the oppressed nations and Nationalities of the country. But the bottom line is that there will not be a peace till the fundamental issues are solved appropriately and inclusively.

All Ethiopians are entitled to know the facts about the formation of Ethiopia, and steps need to be initiated and encouraged for all the sustained societal wounds with comprehensive corrective actions if a real solution is meant. Otherwise, the cycle of wars, violence, miseries and poverty will continue with no end insight, and please make no mistake of knowing who is responsible for that!!!! Short cuts may appear attractive at times, but it will often ends up producing a short lived deceiving temporary joy which characterized all the previous and the present colonial regimes of ETHIOPIA. The choice is in the hands of responsible Ethiopians: "Shall we dance to the old rhythms which continued to produce ... you know what ..., or will you change your steps according to the current true realities.

Marriage
What is that marriage has to do with ones freedom. Ideally, Marriage is a bond between a man and a women regardless of color, religon, ethnicity, etc. i.e. if people of differing ethnic groups marry one another has nothing has to do with the other seeking its freedom/liberation. Their marriage does not change the nations quest for freedom. In other words, just because some folks have a spouse from the diffrent group the quest for freedom does not change. The reasons are: they created bond to be with one another at any cost; also nobody forces the other person to change his/her citizenship and there is no animosity against the person just because he/she is from a diffrent ethnic group as long as he does not harm the other group.
In the case of Oromo, there is no statistics that indicates how many percent married from another ethnic group. If we take educated guess it won't be more than 2 percent which equates to 800 thousand. In my opinion that is in the ball park.
Please do not assume if Oromia becomes independent people the court will be busy with divorce. Oromos are known for accepting and loving other ethnicities. Remember "Gudifacha" which means in Oromiffa "adoption." Oromos have adopted numerous childern from other ethnic group in Ethiopia. as well as white people from U.S.A who happen to be in Oromo land.

You Aren't Being Honest
1. OLF has registred results that a genuine Oromo can be proud of. The demarcation/boundary of the Oromia state, the adoption and use of Qubee Afaan Oromo (Oromo alphabet), educating the Oromo people of the historical fallacey of the empire state Ethiopia, advocating the right of the Oromo people to the international community including the United Nations. The above are among results achieved by ABO. It's true that OLF has not achieved all its goals. Like every liberation front or political party OLF faced obstacles and through persistance and selfless sacrifice of the Oromo people it will achieve its goal in the future. It's only 36 years since its inception so members and supporters we have to be patient our endurance will prevail with triumph. For opponents, no matter how you hate or belittle our organization, we don't stop till we get to our goal. BTW do you know how long it took South Africans to be free?
2. Why "not all Oromos buying into this separation...." as someone indicated below. First of all, Never ever, 100% approval can be obtained in any competing idea. what's desired in democarcey is winning the vote of the majority. In the case of Oromo and Oromia, there has never been a plain field where the Oromo people was asked to choose one or the other. That's is one of OLF's future goal to enable the Oromo people so that they choose what's best for them. Then it's only then you/we could say OLF is pushing an idea that is not supported by its people.
3. The divide and rule methodolgy does not work. Shoa, Harrar, Wollega is the divide and rule machinary of the Abyssinians. There is one Oromo with his three offsprings: Boran, Macca, Barnetuma.

You got That?

What's Right-Wing?
Some of you just borrow a word from other conceptes or contexts and use it where it doesn't fit. Right-wing means a political stance that aligns itself with conservatives and reactionaries. All OLF (without this or that tactical strategy) endorses the liberation of Oromia. i.e there is no right-wing vs left-wing. Just for the sake of argument if I take your propostion and elaborate on it. You meant to condmen the side of OLF that does the staright talk saying our clear vision is to liberate Oromia. Based on the concept and definition of Right-wing, they don't fit the criterion of Right-wing. The reason is simple. Do you call people who advocate "One Ethiopia" conservative or Reactinary? Do you label Americans who love their country and fought against the British invaders conservative or Ractionary? if you say no to my question, then, how can you call its counter part a "Right-Wing" You either have to find another term, or use the term for all similar ideas.

Thank you

Let's be Honest
The OLF party is one of the oldest party we havn't seen any result. As an Oromo when I asked why may be not all Oromo's buying in to this sepration or a nation of Oromya, therefor the best solution is to have a democratic Ethiopia to all ethnics respected and live peacefully. To my fellow brothers who belive the Oromia Nation you are leading us to a serious cilvil war in the histroy of Africa. Ask your self The Showa oroma has right to decide to harar oromo weather they are Ethiopian's or not . That goes to Bale, Welega etc . By the way do you know half of the oromo ppl married with other ethnic groups. THE BEST SOLUTION IS WE ALL SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE PEACEFULLY UNDER ONE CONSTITUTION RESPECT ALL HUMAN EQUALLY::
