Time for Kenya & Ethiopia to recognize Somaliland independence(Blog)
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

BLOGGER/ADDIS

The horn of Africa has endured some of the biggest wars in Africa. The region is one of the most unstable in the world. Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia are historically the principal states shaping the region’s politics and due to the Greater Somalia (GS) ideology Somali children know how to shoot machine guns more than they know how to use a pencil. Because of the GS, Somalia has been the only country in the world without a government the last 16 years. And these irredentism ambitions of Greater Somalia will bring more wars in the region since satisfying Greater Somalia means destroying the boundaries of Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti. So the big question is, why aren’t horn of Africa countries assisting Somaliland get its independence and give GS the final blow?

As Ethiopia and Kenya keep quiet, the propaganda attack against Somaliland by Greater Somalia (GS) advocates is increasing everyday. Many GS supporters are accusing Somaliland of being Ethiopian puppet. This is comical because it is not Ethiopia that originally put the Somaliland boundaries; it was UK holding it as a “British protectorate.” So Ethiopia has nothing to do with the plan of Somalilanders to have their own country. They already declared independence many years ago and for them it is a done deal. Ethiopia has nothing to do with their decision. Yes, Somaliland was “federated” with Ethiopia 500 years ago and Yes, a small part of Somaliland was governed under the Ethiopian ancient Kingdom of Axum in the 3rd century. But today it is the 21st century. Ethiopians today don’t have any ambition to take any part of Somaliland. In fact, Haile Selassie was able to reach Mogadishu and Hargeisha many times during various battles six decades ago, but he was never interested in taking over Somalia. Also after the failed invasion by Siad Barre, Ethiopia could have kept its troops in Somalia and tried to permanently take its lands during Mengistu government. But Ethiopia was not interested. In general, Ethiopia has NO interest in colonizing or in taking Mogadishu or Hargeisha.

Secondly, other Greater Somalia (GS) supporters are accusing Somaliland of being a secessionist. In fact, this “secessionist” label is being used as a curse word. This is even more comical because the same people who support the secessionist ONLF are accusing Somaliland for being secessionist. This is illogical. It doesn’t make sense.

But what is logical politics is for all the people in the horn of Africa to identify the historical source of the region’s problems. All countries in Africa are ethnically mixed and diverse. All African nations have a multi-ethnic society; some of these are shaped this way because of historical African conquests and some of these are shaped this way because of the general AU consensus to keep the status quo of boundaries used during the European colonization. However, when we come to the Greater Somalia advocates, they are seeking to be a nation of only one ethnicity by annexing the territories of other African nations. By doing so, GS contradicts the de facto AU status quo of a multi-ethnic society. For the GS to be achieved, it has to break up all neighboring countries. East Kenya has to be annexed, southeastern Ethiopia has to be annexed and parts of Djibouti must be annexed. Thus, it is clear that the horn of Africa will never have peace and stability as long as GS politicians dominate Mogadishu politics. It is long overdue for Mogadishu politicians to accept the reality in Africa and to accept the status quo in Africa. So ONLF, ICU and many other Somali groups seeking to directly or indirectly satisfy their Greater Somalia ideology must be opposed if we care for the stability of not just the region but also the whole Africa. The Horn of African countries recognizing Somaliland’s independence will give the final blow to the GS ideology and marginalize the GS advocates out of mainstream politics in Mogadishu permanently.

Somaliland
To all the Prophets of Doom.

The Honeymoon is definitely over.
Somaliland, despite it's teething problems,is here to stay period.
those prophtes of doom who keep on voicing negative concerns can do so until the cows come home.
Nobody expects everything will be perfect. We are still a finding our feet, practically everything is done by the energetic efforts of the people with very little outside help.
Somaliland is here to stay

The flaws in your arguement are endless
"However, when we come to the Greater Somalia advocates, they are seeking to be a nation of only one ethnicity by annexing the territories of other African nations. By doing so, GS contradicts the de facto AU status quo of a multi-ethnic society." How then are you supporting the de facto AU status quo of a multi-ethnic society when you advocate somaliland recognition, a state with one ethnicity?

"This is even more comical because the same people who support the secessionist ONLF are accusing Somaliland for being secessionist. This is illogical. It doesn’t make sense."

With your logic, then does this mean you support and recognize the secessionist ONLF?

"So Ethiopia has nothing to do with the plan of Somalilanders to have their own country."

oh really? yet you write a lenghty none sensical, contradictory blog of how a sovereignty of a nation (somalia) should be destroyed because they share common unity, while Ethiopia, an ethnical federalist, that forcefully occupy oromos, amharas, afar, and somalis should be spared.

If you're so concern with the stability of the region, then help stop your own government ongoing genocide, and human right abuse toward its own citizen. Instead of advocating more distruction of other nation's sovereignty. If not, then support the total breakage of the whole region, and yes that includes somalia too.

The African union is Corrupt and full of warloads
Supreme Court without success. In a move mirroring Al Gore's decision to concede the US presidential election despite concerns about the vote count, Silanyo, in the interest of national unity, conceded the Presidency to Riyale.

In April 2005, the government announced that legislative elections would be held on September 15, 2005, completing Somaliland's transition to democracy.

Future Prospects

The challenges facing Riyale and Somaliland are numerous. Despite being independent for fourteen years and having all the tools of a state, recognition continues to be denied to Somaliland, although increasingly, some foreign government agencies and international NGOs are dealing directly with Hargeisa.

The country's dynamic Foreign Minister, Edna Adan Ismail, continues to press the world community to recognize Somaliland.

Corruption, while relatively small by African standards, is becoming a major problem, in part because of the meager financial resources Somaliland has to begin with.

Remittances from abroad (estimated at $250-$500 million annually) have greatly helped the reconstruction effort. But with a budget of only $25 million per year, Hargeisa has not been able to rebuild, much less improve, existing infrastructure. Recognition would bring the aid necessary to do this.

Riyale's government has struggled to reverse the crippling poverty (fueled in part by Saudi Arabia's ban on Somali livestock) in the country.

In recent years, Somaliland has absorbed thousands of refugees that have returned from Ethiopia and other countries. In addition, the addiction of thousands of Somalilanders to khat poses a serious long term problem for Somaliland's economy.

Some have questioned the viability of Somaliland as an independent country. The peace, stability, economic climate and political developments of the past fourteen years demonstrate that Somaliland can stand as an independent nation, and it should be recognized as such.

However, while some western nations (notably Britain) are sympathetic to Somaliland, its claims to independence continue to be vigorously challenged by the remnants of Somalia, the Arab League, and some African countries.

In October 2004, a Somali reconciliation conference (the 14th since 1991) in Kenya elected Abdullahi Yusuf to lead Somalia. Yusuf will head a Transitional Federal Government (TFG) for the next five years. The choice of Yusuf as Somalia's president disappointed Somalilanders.

Yusuf, the former President of the autonomous Puntland region, had been engaged with clashes with Hargeisa over Somaliland's eastern Sanaag and Sool regions. Indeed, within days of Yusuf's ascencion to power, Somaliland and Puntland forces engaged in bloody clashes over the border.

It is highly unlikely that Somaliland will even consider rejoining Somalia so long as Yusuf is in power. Moreover, with each passing day, the chaos that continues to reign in Somalia makes it unlikely that Somaliland will ever rejoin Somalia.

Well as a Somalilander i say that it is indeed a Great loss for my continent that Somaliland is not Recognized. Ethiopia ,and the African union can not keep on being blind to the fact that Somaliland predates the African union which was formed in 1974 in Addis Abeba. Somaliland has been part and parcel of the commonwealth with its national boundaries since king Menelik times So hypocrisy is not a Solution to the African problems nor a Warloads. The African union is corrupt and has many war criminals who want to rewrite the African history is i only say Somaliland `Agare`` Somaliland Andanet

Perhaps Ethiopia should be divided
as a nothern Somali, I do not believe that my country should be divided into two just because one upon a time
and English man and Itialian man conquere it. We somalis are one people, one religion one nation and one ethnic, there is no need to divide it, however if the author wants to divide a nation I would say the best nation to divide into little pieces it the Ethiopian country that makes up many different nations.

Love live Somalia

Somaliland means the Land of Somalia
There was British and italian Somalilands, both regions united in pre-indepence. The British Somaliland had no flag, constitution or whatever. It was merely a protectorate.

Please do not distrot facts or history, Haile seleaisa nor Mengustu could have taken any inch of the somali teritory during the battles with somalia, and do not forgrt that During the 1977 war, ethopian army was totaly destroyed and were on the run, it is the soviet union and Cuba that came to their defence. The somali Army reached the outskirts of Dire dawa.

zenawi doesn't care about ethiopia
somaliland is already independent with its own constitution, elections, national services and troops. meles zenawi has to stop the useless diplomacy. east africa will not have peace unless expansionism ends. we need to fight poverty not have endless wars. meles zenawi has not done anytime to help somaliland.while in fact mengistu assisted somaliland post-somali invasion in 1979. we have a leadership that made ethiopia one of the biggest landlocked country in the world. somaliland should start helping opposition groups in ethiopia because zenawi is narrow minded
