Update: Medrek says it will not accept results, EU says election not free

EU election observing team Chief Thijs Berman

  • Update: Leader of European Union election observation mission said the Ethiopian election has fallen short of international standards. According to EU chief Thijs Berman, there was "uneven playing field" adding that ”There were reports of harassment and intimidation, including cases of violence voiced both by the opposition and to a lesser extent by the ruling party. The sheer volume and consistency of these complaints is a matter of concern that has to be taken into consideration.” Meanwhile, the Meles ruling party is claiming that it won 499 seats out of the 547-member parliament.

(JT) Medrek opposition coalition leader Dr. Merera Gudina said his party will not accept the results released by the Ethiopian election board according local media reports. Meanwhile, Engineer Hailu Shawel, leader of the second largest opposition party All Ethiopia Unity Party (AEUP) said the voting and election counting process has been worse than he expected.

Medrek and AEUP said virtually all their election observers have been chased away by the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front( EPRDF) party cadres and the results of the election is fully dependent on the decision of the office of the prime minister. Analysts expect the ruling party controlled election board to allocate seats to ruling party affiliates in regional states.

Chairman of the third opposition party EDP, Lidetu Ayalew, sarcastically told the local media that the EPRDF ruling party might win 99 percent of the votes. According to him, early results announced by the election board are unrealistic even for a rigged election.

Opposition members have complained of government intimidation and have witnessed pre-filled ballot boxes in some polling stations.

Unconfirmed sources said prominent ethnic Tigrayan opposition officials Siye Abraha and Gebru Asrat have reportedly lost the election as Meles Zenawi's Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) is expected to take all seats in Tigray as well. In Addis Ababa and other cities where the opposition swept the 2005 election, the results have been reversed in 2010 as the ruling party is expected to take 99 percent of the seats in the city where it is the most unpopular.

Arrests

Oromo-Ethiopian political analyst Jawar Siraj Mohammed said the election has "embarrassed the Meles ruling party in the eyes of the international community." Oromo opposition leader Merera said "an election where our observers were not allowed will not be recognized."

"Ballot boxes were opened and stuffed before the arrival of our people" added Dr. Gudina and declared "all this cheating was done with millions of witnesses." Africa director at Human Rights Watch Rona Peligal said that "behind an orderly facade, the government pressured, intimidated and threatened Ethiopian voters." Some opposition officials said they will challenge the results in courts, however the judiciary in Ethiopia is also controlled by Meles Zenawi's party.

Sources in Jimma and Wellega zones in southern Ethiopia have told Jimma Times media that dozens of opposition supporters have been arrested in western Oromia. The country remains tense and many fear violence due to people's anger could inflame the nation unless opposition leaders calm the situation. However, opposition leaders do not have access to the state media anymore as the national ETV has returned back to its regular programming of EPRDF propaganda.

Ethiopia under Zenawi named 2nd poorest country in the world
According to a new index developed by Oxford University and the UN, Ethiopia under Meles is ranked the second poorest country on earth. This comes as more international analysis have also began to question the accuracy of the Meles government's double digit economic growth claims and similar disputed government statistics referred institutions like the IMF.

In 2009 the percentage of Ethiopians who are in chronic need of food aid tripled to nearly 20% of the population compared to 1990 when the country was ruled buy the pro-Soviet communist government of Mengistu Halle Mariam.

Response to “seek your rightful place as a majority, “
Oromia become a part of Ethiopia by force by British backed Abyssinians rulers. It is undeniable fact. Unity based on equal rights and respect may work in Ethiopia. From what we have seen so far, no government of Ethiopia has been friendly to the Oromos in the history of Ethiopia. You can also look at the current situation, which Oromos are being killed and thrown in jail by the current government. No Oromo should be thrown to jail or killed for supporting or having any kind of political ideology in Oromia. We are not willing to sell our freedom for so called development work the current government sings about. Therefore, it is up to the Oromos to decide the future of Oromia. One thing Oromos will not accept the old Ethiopianity which those reactionary people like the one who wrote the Galla comment would like to see someday.. The “your so called Ethiopanity” comment was intended to the old Ethiopianity wasn’t intended to offend anyone. And stop telling us what is best for us and know what is best for you.
Peace..

Interesting
How can a person be intimidated but at the same time speak his mind. It sounds like a contridiction to me. I mean the opposition is speaking out on how ever they felt yet they say that they were intimidated....a bit fishy beside realy when you think about it it makes sens that the ruling party wins all the time just for the simple fact that there are like 20 something opposition parties and one ruling party...imagin if there were 100 voters and 20 voted for the ruling and the rest voted for the oposition even though 80 is the majority realy the 20 is the majority just for the simple fact that 80 votes is being devided by 20 opposition parties where as the rest of the 20 is for EPRDF...so even if we say that the majority of Ethiopia does not like EPRDF still the people are devided among many many many other oppositions so let's not cry cry cry over and over again cuz after all it's common sense people. For Gods sake even the people that lives in Ethiopia know this and you so called people living in the west can't even do a simple math. Shame on you shame shame shame

To all concerned Ethiopians who love the unity of the nation and ouster of Meles Zenawi from power should do two things from now on to see a real change in Ethiopia?

1. All different opposition parties should unite to a single party to MEDREK including Lidetu and Hailu the real enemy of Ethiopian and the main reason Meles to stay in power and to continue to damage the country. As a single party they should confront the ruling party every ill decision they make in the future and other policies like to have our own port and Ethiopia either to wage a war against Eritrea or rally with Issayas let him rule the whole country in the near future.

2. If the all opposition parties can not unit then the only chance you have is arm struggle and destabilizing all over the major cities lead by students to paralyze the ruling party and go after foreign embassies that support the ruling parties to give them uncomfortable situation to live in Ethiopia include African diplomats in Addis Ababa. This is the real test the Amhara ethnic to show how much they love Ethiopia and how brave they are to revolt against the ruling party even to allay with Shaebia to get rid of Meles and his followers. The ruling party is not for Tigray or Ethiopia the way they doing business.

3. If the above two scenario fail, then mother nature will elect another leader when the draught take place once every 20 to 25 years and the next draught is due any time and the ruling party will flee as the previous leaders of Ethiopia did.

The bottom line is all Ethiopians from all walk of life should condom the following people for the failure of the oppositions to gain attraction by the general public due frustration by splitting and arguing opposition parties and people ignored to participate the election. Out of 80 Million populations only fewer than 30 million registered to participate and God know how many of them went to the poll. What shows us is only the ruling party members showed up at the poll and the majority of the population stayed at home.
Lidetu Ayele
Hailu Shewil
Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam ( Don King of NY Ye Ethiopia Ashangulit).

Lidetu Ayele lost his seat in parliament. He is the real loser and I am very glad for it, he was and is the real enemy of Ethiopia. If Lidetu and Hailu had to join MEDREK as single party to challenge the ruling party, they could have ousted Meles from power with out election by paralyzing the Government. They could have said no to participate in the election when Meles killed their candidates and harassed and chased and people forced to vote for EPRDF only. All oppositions should have boycotted the election and denied Meles from getting any financial aid and support from the outside world.

Now all oppositions should unit and declare as one party and nullify the election as illegitimate and should be held another election next year with out rule of fake codes and all access to the Media and equal financial support to all candidates.

Respond to name caller “Galla”
I want to respond to name caller “Galla”
Whoever you are, you are not better than the Veterinary doctor; you just exposed your empty skull without gray matter when you devalue his educational status. Whether his is on the left or on the right on his political view, he is still an Ethiopian leader. He is in the position you can only wish to achieve. As a member of EPRDF, I can tell you, our principle is to treat Oromo, Tigre, Ahmara people and all other “Ethiopian people” with respect and dignity. It is sad to have person like you claiming the Ethiopian nationality with me and other peace loving Ethiopian people. The people like you is the reason for creation of OLF, TPLF, EPLF, ONLF led Ethiopia away from development to destruction for last hundred years. I am an oromo, the truth is that whether anyone by the name of Merera Gudina, Meles zinawi or Hielu shawl hold the position of leadership , Oromia will remain in the possession of the Oromo people. You, on the other hand confined in the dog house of hatred. I hope this is will give you some enlightenment.
Former OLF leader

It really doesn't matter those opposition who got elected to participate in the parliament. This is just a call for a change using other means. This election could have given a chance to Oromos and other oppressed people to consider solidarity. Now we know the ultimate solution.
