About Jimma City and Zone

Jimma (also spelled Jima) is the biggest city in southwestern Ethiopia. It is commonly known as the birth place of coffee and the name coffee itself is said to have derived from “Kaffa,” the former province of which Jimma is the center. Located in Oromia state, it is one of the three top coffee producing regions in Ethiopia and the zone possesses several markets. The general zone has a population of over 2.7 million people. The settlement has been the capital of various kingdoms throughout history, including the Gibe Kingdom of Jimma and the Kingdom of Kaffa. Some of the area’sattractions include the scenic Omo valley, the Palace of Abba Jiffar,hot springs and museums. It is one of the least modernized big cities in Ethiopia. It has a few small colleges, Jimma airport (JIM) and Jimma University (Ethiopia’s first innovative COPE institution of higher education)
